Fly Fishing Courses
We first offered fly-fishing courses in 2002. Six years on and their popularity just grows and grows. Year on year, we have increased the number of courses offered, just to keep pace with demand.
We believed that the courses were recognised as the best available in the Northeast of England. Now, we are not so sure. It seems that our reputation extends throughout the country. People come from as far away as the Scottish borders and the Midlands in order to learn fly-fishing at Lockwood. Our day course has become a popular Christmas or birthday present.
We are not complacent though. We wanted to know what makes our courses work. So, we have carefully evaluated the 2007 season. People who came to Lockwood told us that the features that attracted them here were:
Courses are delivered by qualified professional coaches
Some other fisheries are content to use unqualified staff to teach fly casting skills. The ability to cast effectively is absolutely vital if you are to enjoy your fishing. We firmly believe that a qualified coach is essential to ensure that good practice is established from the word go. Roger Beck will be leading our courses for the sixth successive year. He has an enviable reputation as a fly-fishing coach, recognised through his membership of the Hardy and Greys Academy of Instructors and features in the angling press. Again this season, Jeff Metcalfe will support him.
There is no compromise over equipment
Top quality equipment will be provided as part of the course fee. You will be taught using the latest fly rods from Greys, specially chosen to help you to learn to cast effectively.
Courses are taught in small groups
Previously we have run the days with six anglers. Feedback suggested that you wanted even more opportunity for personal attention. We have listened to what you have to say. We have reduced to five the number of people that will normally be accepted on each course.
We cover everything you need to know in order to start fishing
Both theory and practice are covered. We tell you the things that are not in the books or the videos.
During the day you will:-
- Learn about fishing equipment and be advised on what to buy and what to avoid.
- Learn how to assemble equipment properly.
- Tie the essential knots.
- Be taught the essential fly casting skills.
- Learn the effective ways of fishing at Lockwood.
- Have the opportunity to fish through the evening at an award-winning fishery.
Every person who attends a day course can have another day ticket at half price during the 2008 season.
All this for £45, inclusive
Intermediate Courses are also available
Most of our courses are designed for beginners to fly-fishing. However, we recognise the needs of the improving angler. We will offer tuition to meet the requirements of anglers with some experience who want to improve technique. Details of group opportunities will be posted on the website. Anyone preferring one-to-one tuition at the fishery can arrange this with Roger. These sessions will be available on the same dates as day courses, from late afternoon.

The Lockwood Philosophy
We are very keen to encourage everyone to come fishing at Lockwood. We offer special days for young people during the summer.
There is a special, fully equipped boat for disabled anglers. By arrangement, free taster sessions are available for disabled anglers.
There are several ladies who fish regularly at Lockwood. Two of them have featured in the national angling press. In 2007 we arranged several tuition sessions especially for women. These events were popular, but, despite what we are assured by others, we find increasing numbers of women prefer to attend our mixed day courses. This season, we will, as usual, be trying hard to encourage more women to enjoy fly-fishing. Ladies, please let us know what you would like us to provide for you. You can do so by emailing Gordon at info@lockwoodfishery.co.uk or Roger at beckfisher@hotmail.com
Don’t worry if you haven’t any fishing tackle, we will provide everything you need at no extra cost.
