Fly Fishing Courses

Fly fishing courses are now in their tenth year at Lockwood. When we started them in 2002, we had no idea how popular they would become. A quick calculation suggests that we have introduced around eight hundred people to the sport. Lockwood is proud to be proactive in recruiting new anglers.

Despite their longevity, we have not become complacent; we have listened to attendees over the years and refined content and delivery. Feedback is very positive and we are aware of people travelling from all over the country in order to learn to fly fish at Lockwood. The courses remain very popular as birthday and Christmas presents.

We are determined to continue to offer coaching of the highest possible quality with an emphasis on learning essential skills in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We firmly believe that several factors contribute to our success:

We firmly believe that a qualified coach is essential...

...to ensure that good practice is established from the word go. As usual, Roger Beck will be delivering the courses at Lockwood. He has an enviable reputation as a fly fishing coach and is well known throughout the north of England. You may also know him through his monthly column in the Yorkshire Post or his demonstrations at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Top quality equipment will be provided for the courses

This is included within the course fee. Current, modern gear from prestigious manufacturers will be specially selected. The fly rods are specially chosen to help you to learn to cast effectively.

Courses are taught in groups of five

Over the years, we have learned that this is the optimum group size. It provides every opportunity for individual attention whilst allowing a genuine group dynamic to develop. Just occasionally there may be an extra person in the class; we will do this to accommodate family and friendship groups.

The course content is comprehensive

Both theory and practice are covered; you will learn the things that are not in the books or the videos.

Intermediate Courses are also available

Most of our courses are designed for beginners to fly-fishing. However, we recognise the needs of the improving angler. We will offer tuition to meet the requirements of anglers with some experience who want to improve technique. The intermediate courses are also well suited to people who have already completed a beginners, day. We usually find that fly casting skills are central to success. So, the intermediate courses are based upon a close scrutiny of existing individual skills. Once this is established, tuition is channelled to meet individual needs. Common, reoccurring issues are usually associated with achieving distance and presentation. Another common problem is that of safe and effective casting in a breeze. When existing skills allow, more advanced techniques such as double haul may be introduced. The aim of intermediate courses is always to meet individual needs. Details of group opportunities will be posted on the website. Anyone preferring one-to-one tuition at the fishery can arrange this with Roger. These sessions will be available on the same dates as day courses, from late afternoon.

The Lockwood Philosophy

The aim, at Lockwood, is to encourage anyone to fish here. We work very hard to engender a supportive and friendly atmosphere; we hope that beginners and newcomers will feel supported by the band of regulars, some of whom are outstanding anglers. We are delighted to note increasing numbers of ladies attending the courses. This is reflected by a growing band of women on the bank. There is a special, fully equipped boat for disabled anglers. By arrangement, free taster sessions are available for disabled anglers.

Don’t worry if you haven’t any fishing tackle, we will provide everything you need at no extra cost.
